How crypto payment works at Proton Mail

Bitcoin isn't offered at sign-up. Create a free account first, then pick a plan in Settings and choose Bitcoin under Payment details to get a QR code, BTC address and amount. The payment buys account credits that pay for the plan. It can take up to 24 hours to fully confirm, and any overpayment is added as credit.

Accepted cryptocurrencies

  • BTC

Only on-chain Bitcoin. Proton says it doesn't support Lightning, ERC-20 tokens, Monero or TRC-20 USDT. No third-party processor is named.

Good to know before you pay

  • Bitcoin can't pay subscriptions automatically; to renew, pay at least 24 hours before your bill is due.
  • Don't reuse a QR code or BTC address from an earlier payment; start a new payment each time.
  • Credit added by paying with Bitcoin never expires.
  • Under Proton's Terms, refunds (within 30 days of first purchase) go only to the original payment method and currency.
